Monday, September 30th-Mt Rainier National Park

Even though we lived in the Portland area for 10 years, we never visited Mt Rainier NP. Why? Yo no se! Anyway, we spent most of today in the park. We’re camping about 10 miles from one of the entrances in Randle, WA. We’re back in the mountains and it’s really cold again! We follow the weather in Houston and Dallas and we are really sorry you have to put up with that hot weather a little longer. Here’s a pic of the temp here today:

We encountered a lot of snow on the ground and a few random flakes in the air!


The first hike we went on was the Grove of The Patriarchs trail. Here are a couple of pics of Diana by some of the 1000 year old trees there. For WA these are really big trees!

Monday, August 12th-A Spectacular Day on the Water!

Today we took a nine hour day cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park. What did we see? My goodness, it’s hard to list them all! Let’s start with 30-40 glaciers, building sized icebergs, multiple pods of Orca/ Killer Whales, several humpback whales, dozens of sea otters, jumping Silver Salmon, several different types of birds (Cormorant, Tufted and Horned Puffins, Auklet, Terns, one bald eagle, and Murre), Steller Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, AND some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable! Probably the most spectacular thing we saw was unique calving of the Northwestern Glacier. Here a fixed photo but I’d like to describe for you how it happened. Saturday, October 26-Good News and Bad News About Lake Tahoe!

We got to Lake Tahoe about dark-30 on Friday night. We drove through Truckee (on the CA side) down to the lake and then around the Nevada side to Zephyr Cove RV Park. We’re about four miles North of Stateline. First the good news: Lake Tahoe is a gift! The water is almost as blue as the water in Crater Lake but LT is much bigger. The lake is roughly rectangular with the dimensions being roughly ten by twenty miles. Everyone who has ever been here has a favorite part of the lake. The favorite part of LT for Diana and I has always been the area around Emerald Bay. Here are a couple of pics: Now for the bad news: I took a pretty nasty fall. I’m okay but here’s a quick summary: I have a broken right thumb and the orthopedic surgeon put a pin in it, with a couple of stitches, so it will heal correctly. My left knee has a hairline fracture so it’s immobilized with a flexbrace. Several stitches in my head and that pretty much does it. Look at the rocks at the bottom of the lower pic

Wednesday, July 17th-Portage and Whittier, AK

Yesterday we took off looking at Alaska and just rested. Isn’t that what retirement is about? Anyway we made up for it today with almost 16 and almost 18,000 steps. Here is a pic of where we stopped and ate a picnic lunch on the way to Portage: We were driving along the Portage Glacier Highway and saw a sign that said Moose Flats Day Use Area. We glanced at each other and said “Why not?” It’s just a little turnout along the highway but isn’t it beautiful? Then we went to Portage Lake and talked with a Chugach National Forest Ranger about hikes in the area. She steered us to a .9 mile trail called the Byron Glacier Trail. Here’s a pic I took looking up at the glacier: If you enlarge the pic some, you can see the glaciers up in the mountains valleys above Diana’s head.
